LANDSCAPE – A VISIONARY APPROACH
Patricia Haskey, Painter and Mike Shepherd, Photographer
Two different mediums, one single exhibition.
Patricia and Mike have worked together for over twelve years and share a love of the Lake District and a visionary approach to interpreting the landscape with their different mediums.
To quote Ruskin “Art is not a study of positive reality, it is the seeking for ideal truth.”
Exhibiting paintings and photographs together is not really known in England, but it has long been a tradition in other countries, particularly America where, in the 291 Gallery in New York (early 20th century), pioneering photographers Ansell Adams, Alfred Stieglitz and Paul Strand were exhibited alongside Picasso and Braque.
Patricia’s joyful, imaginative, semi-abstract paintings are a celebration of the beauty of nature, using colour to convey her emotional response to the landscape. Mike’s work echoes the same inspiration, but in contrast, is expressed in insightful semi-abstract black and white photographs that push the boundaries of conventional landscape photography.
“We are absolutely delighted and honoured to be exhibiting at Brantwood in this very special year celebrating the 200th anniversary of Ruskin’s birth. Ruskin’s vision was extraordinary and inspirational, unceasingly exploring artistic expression and meaning. We are musing that this rather innovative showing of paintings and photographs together would be one that he would have approved of.”
