Textile Pictures: Gilli Slater

MAC member Gilli Slater has her work included in a collaborative show at Inspire Gifts & Gallery in Lancaster from 23rd February to 30th March.

Gilli’s work is mainly inspired by the beautiful landscape of the Arnside and Silverdale area. It comes from an imaginative recollection of the textures, light and feelings she has experienced, rather than true life. Her pictures can be seen in local galleries, cafes and exhibitions. She has also undertaken several private commissions and run textile art workshops for schools, art groups and artist’s studios.
Gilli has lived and worked in this area for 40 years. After retiring from 25 years of teaching she found time to follow a more artistic path. This had been lying dormant since she gained a degree from Southampton University in Textile Art and Education in the 1970s.
The inspiration for her artwork comes from the colours and forms found in the local scenery. She has a special love for trees and the light that plays through them, their knobbly trunks, twisted roots and the distant vistas to be glimpsed through them. She developed her unique technique of wrinkled fabric to enhance the textural qualities of the landscape that inspires her.
Gilli also creates lino prints on textile which are further enhanced using Brusho dye. The effects caused by the vibrant colours migrating through the textile fabric never cease to amaze her.
